Who pays payroll team members' salaries and taxes?

Paying your direct employees' salaries, local taxes and statutory payments depends on two factors:

  1. Country-specific regulations.
  2. Customer preference.

There are countries where Oyster is able to execute part or all of the payments on your behalf. Likewise, there are countries where the customer has to execute the payments directly. As a result, there are three possible scenarios you could have with regards to payment processing for global payroll.

Please check with your account manager as to which options are available in each country and to agree on your payment procession option.

Scenario 1: Customer takes care of all payments

In this case, when a payroll cycle reaches the status “Payment instructions ready”, Oyster shares with you, the customer, the payment instructions. Instructions include salary payments for payroll team members and any other taxes / statutory payments you have to make in that country. You can use the payment instructions to directly make those payments.

Scenario 2: Oyster takes care of all payments

In this case, when a payroll cycle reaches the status “Payment instructions ready”, Oyster shares with you, the customer, the funding instructions. Funding instructions include a sum of both salary payments and any other taxes / statutory payments that need to be made. You can use the “Funding instructions” to fund Oyster first. Oyster then uses this funding to make all of the necessary payments including salary payments to payroll team members and any other taxes / statutory payments.

Scenario 3: Oyster takes care of salary payments and the customer takes care of taxes / statutory payments

In this case, when a payroll cycle reaches the status “Payment instructions ready”, Oyster shares with you, the customer, the “Funding instructions” which includes a sum of all salary payments, and payment instructions for the customer to make the taxes / statutory payments. You can use the “Funding instructions” to fund Oyster. Oyster then uses this funding to make the salary payments to all the payroll team members in this country. You can use the “Payment instructions” to make the taxes / statutory payments in the country.

Note: in countries where statutory pension payments are remitted to the same authority with income tax/other social taxes, Oyster is able to support pension payments on behalf of customers.
