How to obtain your Foreigner Identity Number (NIE) in Spain

The Foreign Identity Number or NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal, unique, and exclusive number assigned to foreigners in Spain who require identification to engage in economic, professional, or social activities.

An NIE obtained via the Consular Office identifies the bearer to all levels of the Spanish public administration but does not entitle the holder to reside in Spain or prove residence there.

Steps

  1. Schedule an appointment to obtain the NIE for tax purposes. This is extremely important for compliance with legislation and ensuring that you are appropriately taxed.
Please consider that appointments are scarce, so it is recommended to do this process very early, at 7 AM, when appointments come up.
  2. Fill out the TA1 form and amend the ID in Social Security from passport to NIE.
  3. Take a picture of the front and back of the NIE document you obtain.
  4. Once granted the NIE, you must send it to Oyster Support along with a completed TA1 form.
